A ground-breaking major
study in 2001 involving macular degeneration vitamins was
sponsored by the National Eye Institute - The Age Related Eye
Disease Study (AREDS).
This important research
proved, for the first time ever and beyond a shadow of a doubt,
that supplements containing high levels of nutrients slowed and
possibly even prevented the progression of macular degeneration.

research showing that not only can vision be saved, vision can

scavengers. The macular pigment, composed of Lutein and
Zeaxanthin, functions as a color filter to protect the
light-sensitive photoreceptor cells (responsible for visual
acuity) from ultraviolet- light-originated free radical damage. Studies in 1997 revealed a 30% reduced macular pigment density
in eyes with ARMD, found a correlation between reduced macular
pigment density and increased lens density (cataracts) in
seniors, and demonstrated that macular pigment density can be
increased with dietary and/or supplemental lutein. Maintaining
sufficient levels of lutein & zeaxanthin, (the only carotenoid
antioxidants active in the retina) can prevent ARMD and
cataracts and preserve youthful visual sensitivity.
